Driving Through Florida With Photos by Trucker Mike

I lived in Florida in 1959 - 1960, my junior year in high school.  I visited the state for a few months in 1963.  I was not truly prepared for the changes that had taken place in the state when I returned for the first time as a truck driver in 1995 - interstates and major highways criss-crossed the state, strip malls, shopping centers and commercial sprawl filled the roadsides between and around the towns and cities.  I have been to Florida many times since then and have become used to the commercialization of the area, but I can also find rural farm and ranch areas with space to breath in and sandy beaches that aren't over-run with people.

Florida's economy depends in large part on its agricultural products: citrus fruits, vegetables, beef and dairy cattle, and other products that thrive in the state's mild climate.  That same climate also brings millions of tourists to Florida to take advantage of the beaches, amusements parks, boating and fishing.

Assignment: 1. Which 3 major highways travel the length and width of the state?  2. Name the 5 largest cities in Florida.  3. Which bodies of water surround Florida?

4. What are the two main industries of Florida?  5. What Florida city is the furthest south?
